We are a generation of men without fathers. Ours is the generation raised solely by the mother. Traditionally the father would play the role of the authority figure in the family hierarchy, the one with whom we would rebel as adolescents. This type of relationship with male role models seems to be a cause for resentment and competitiveness, one that carries over to future relationship with other males. Assuming this is true, then our mothers must be the role models for future relationships with women. This new duplicitous role as both nurturer and disciplinarian now leaves that same resentment and competitiveness (previously reserved for male relationships) for future lovers to bare. The many conflicts of male to female relationships that this generation’s absent fathers have imposed upon the unconscious minds of its sons has ultimately resulted in the necessity to express the conflicting resentment, lust, and love felt for women. “Cynosure” is my attempt to visually confess and purge myself of these antithetical emotions I feel towards all women.
